Comfort food.

Righto envirogirl. This a little girly but - what’s your favourite comfort food?

Lasagna and hot chocolate.

Lamb shanks, pea soup, mashed potato with cheese in it… mmmm… comfort food. :D

O, what have I done?! It seemed like an interesting idea at the time.. Actually, I think I was just curious about what your choice of comfort food would be and then thought that others would surely have their own.. Well, lets just see how this goes..

You probably wouldn’t be having your lasagna together with the hot choc, would you? Incompatible flavours, no?

Homemade soup: pumpkin, chunky vegetable, chicken, lentil whatever, with thick slices of crusty bread with real butter.

my daughter’s (for a 12 year old she’s a tab hand in the kitchen) ooey, gooey, superbly sticky, sticky date pudding with cream.

Bangers & Mash ! Pork sausages and mashed spud with butter and an egg beaten in. Fried onions and/or baked beans optional extra. Followed by home made apple pie with cloves in it.

I don’t have them in the same vessel envi, but yes I do have them together. I find hot chocolate makes a “comforting’’ chaser to just about any hardy meal.

Gotta like the soup on a cold winter’s eve viv. Roast capsicum’s my fave. Don’t mind a chicken curry either. Hmm, I may have to cook for a week before settling in front of the DVD.

By the way envi, you started this. I showed you mine, what’s yours?

Osso buco, osso buco, osso buco - with saffron rice. Or oxtail with parnsip/potato mash and peas. Warming, whoelsome food that goes deep into the soul - and with a good red wine.

For theshadowmaster, it would have to be my parent’s home made vegie soup. My dad was never any good in the kitchen, but when mum made the home made vegie soup…

It was something of a game with my dad. only when mum was not looking, he would sneak in chunky portions of you name it, vegies, sausague mince dumplings, artichokes…!@#$% artichokes.

Then, and again only when mum was not looking, he would add some extra salt, vegimite, and whatever else he could think of.

The thing was, mum knew his game, and lovingly let him play it ( i dont think he ever knew he had been sprung) she would always make a weak batch, light on the seasoning etc, and dad would always secretly juice it up.

The soup would always be praised, and my dad would always compliment mum- she was a brilliant cook. They were both playing a separate game, and yet this game really worked.

Sadly, neither mum or dad are with us these days, but i do smile big time when i try to make mums vegie soup.

    for this time only

Apologies for the double post but, from where I’m sitting, they were nearly 24 hours apart. I’d given up and posted again. Never mind, two helpings - twice as good!

Sorry foss, I actually couldn’t decide. After giving it some thought, I began to wonder about the true definition of “comfort food”.

Is a comfort food supposed to be addictive (e.g chocolate) or warming (e.g soup) or both (e.g hot choc)? Is it the same as one’s favourite food or can it be different and separate?

Would one have a desire for the comfort food only when one is feeling a certain way, but then desire it not when that mood has changed?

Could the desire for comfort food also be classified as a craving?

Perhaps I should try to look up the answer somewhere.. but where- wikipedia, dictionary?

Despite this quandary, I (reluctantly) admit to recently going through a hot chocolate phase- especially very strong, very dark hot choc prepared with real african cocoa, boiling water and skim milk powder. Of course, this is the most basic variation of hot choc, which can be improved with the addition of other ingredients such as real vanilla and spices (I’m sure there’d be a few nookers out there with just the recipe!)..

I have a concern, however, about hot choc’s affect on the shade of teeth..

Envi, MY comfort food philosophy: If you’re feeling a bit down, a bit lonely, exhausted or overwhelmed, you might turn to “comfort food'’.
No need to apologise HG. Posts were a tad slow in going up there for a while. Baked beans are never optional.
@#$% artichokes shadow! @#$%! And @#$% vegimite to boot.
Jess, don’t forget to take your “comfort toothbrush'’.

Fresh sushi and rice paper rolls from Indochine in Box Hill. The best comfort food around!

  15. 15 bill

My own variant on frozen cheesecake……I don’t make it often but it doesn’t hang around when I do…. - the classic lemon cheesecake recipe from the PWMU cookbook but with a little cinnamon, icing sugar and powdered full cream milk mixed in with the biscuit base before adding the melted butter/margarine - the change is subtle but very morish ….
